Collectors’ Expo to Benefit Three Local Organizations

Three local organizations will receive a portion of the proceeds from a first-time event to be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, in the Buffalo Irish Center, 245 Abbott Road, Buffalo.

One hundred percent of admission collected at the door for the Collectors’ Expo will be donated to Dog Ears Bookstore & Cafe, South Buffalo Alive and the Buffalo Irish Center. Additionally, all money raised through antique appraisals during the event will also be donated to the three South Buffalo organizations. Admission will be $2 per person while antique appraisals will cost $2 each (maximum three items per person).

THE CIVIC HEART powered by AT&T, Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT), and Squeaky Wheel documentary project is a powerful short film diving into the motivation of “public servants” and outlining the ways in which all residents can have a voice in the future of our beloved Buffalo and Western New York region.  Thirty high school students from all over the City of Buffalo worked as a team for six weeks to create a documentary to capture the spirit of the people who serve the people of Buffalo and all of Western New York during the free 2017 Summer Youth Arts Program.  Instructor Kevin Kline worked with teens program to develop this unique Buffalo specific documentary supported by AT&T.

Tickets Available, Sponsors Sought for Annual Buffalonia Event

Pre-sale tickets for Buffalonia, the annual fundraising event for the Matt Urban Human Services Center and a celebration of our great city, are currently available for purchase. Buffalonia will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at 500 Seneca St., Buffalo.

Tickets are priced at just $25 each or 10 for $200 and can be purchased at the Matt Urban Center, 1081 Broadway, Buffalo. Admission includes beer and a food voucher. Lloyd's Food Truck with be there, and DJ Jickster from 97 Rock will join in the festivities. Individuals purchasing a pre-sale ticket at the Matt Urban Center will receive a free Buffalonia T-shirt or a Buffalonia beer mug.

Rural Outreach Center Receives Funding for Two New Initiatives

East Aurora’s Rural Outreach Center (ROC), a nonprofit organization offering a wide variety of social services for those living in Western New York’s rural communities, recently received $12,500 from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Funds at Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. The grant will fund two new initiatives.

The first program to be funded, “ROC in Motion,” is an exercise and activity program that will be taken to two rural mobile home parks for four weeks this summer, two days per week, two hours per day.

Invasive Species Awareness Week Volunteers Wanted for Honeysuckle Harvest at Kenneglenn

In honor of Invasive Species Awareness Week, on Thursday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Western New York Land Conservancy is partnering with the Western New York Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) to remove Tartarian Honeysuckle from the Kenneglenn Nature Preserve in Wales. 

Tartarian Honeysuckle is an invasive shrub that was introduced to the United States from Asia. Here in Western New York, where it has no natural controls, its leaves appear early in the spring and remain into late fall, giving it a competitive advantage over native plants. The implications of an invasive plant infestation are wide reaching, from impacts to native woodland plants to insects and birds.

East Aurora’s Annual Street Festival & Sidewalk Sale Returns on July 29

The Greater East Aurora Chamber of Commerce’s 48th annual Street Festival & Sidewalk Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 29, along Main Street in the heart of the Village of East Aurora. The event will feature local vendors, plenty of activities for kids and families, food and entertainment, Chalk Walk Murals, Operation Kids and much more!

Opening festivities will include the National Anthem at 9:45 a.m. with the American Legion Post #362 Color Guard. Other highlights will include the popular Chalk Walk Murals sponsored by the Town of Aurora Recreation Department from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; a West Herr Buick GMC, West Herr Cadillac new car display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TNT Oil Change; Holland NASCAR Race Car display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and DJ entertainment from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Annunciation to Host Chicken BBQ and Basket Raffle

The Holy Name Society at the Church of the Annunciation, 7580 Clinton St., Elma, will host a Chicken BBQ Dinner and Theme Basket Raffle in Selbert Hall beginning at noon Sunday, June 11.

Dinners will be priced at $11 for adults and $6 for children under 12 and will include Annunciation’s famous mashed potatoes! Take-out service will also be available.
