Excelsior Orthopaedics and The Hand and Shoulder Center of WNY to Combine

AMHERST, N.Y., July 7, 2011 – Excelsior Orthopaedics and The Hand and Shoulder Center of Western New York, also known as Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery, P.C., today announced they have signed a letter of intent to combine the two organizations.  Four surgeons from The Hand and Shoulder Center will become partners of Excelsior Orthopaedics, establishing a center of excellence to be known as The Hand and Shoulder Center at Excelsior.  The decision to pursue the consolidation was approved by the partners of both organizations.

David Uba, chief executive officer, Excelsior Orthopaedics, said the consolidation will result in the largest orthopaedic group in Western New York specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of persons with hand and upper extremity injuries.  “This will establish Excelsior as the premier destination for orthopaedic hand and shoulder care in the region, and further solidify the group’s position as the most comprehensive center of excellence for orthopaedic care in the community,” Uba said.

Catherine Jette, manager, The Hand and Shoulder Center of Western New York, said the decision is the result of a two-year search of relocation options.  “It became clear that to maintain our core focus on hand and shoulder injuries and to avoid duplicating infrastructure, consolidation was the answer for both of our organizations,” Jette said.

Uba and Jette said the integration will enhance the combined organization’s ability to offer new services, expand geographically, retain and recruit new physicians and surgeons, better measure and improve medical outcomes, and broaden the educational experience of its fellows and residents.  It will also provide the ability to further develop a niche specialty while continuing to provide excellent patient care resulting in a strong future and stable employment outlook.

Four surgeons currently with The Hand and Shoulder Center of Western New York – Dale R. Wheeler, M.D.; Owen J. Moy, M.D.; James J. Kelly, D.O.; and Timothy V. McGrath, M.D. – will join nine current physicians from Excelsior as full partners of the consolidated organization.

Partners from both organizations will serve on Excelsior’s expanded board of directors, helping ensure the shared governance, overall management and operation of the combined organization.

Approval and implementation of the consolidation is expected on or before January 1, 2012, following completion of all integration planning, legal reviews, and final execution of the partnership agreements.

According to Dr. Paul D. Paterson, Excelsior board president, the consolidation represents a significant step forward for two well-known and highly respected healthcare providers in the Buffalo area.  “Both organizations, which are clinically strong in their own right, will be even better together.  The integration will help ensure access to vital medical care and specialized services for the entire Western New York community and patients from outside the area, including Southern Ontario,” Dr. Paterson said.

Dr. Dale Wheeler said the consolidation will have a positive impact on existing patients at Excelsior as well as current patients of The Hand and Shoulder Center of Western New York.  “Our patients will experience increased access and enhanced continuity of care with on-site magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), DME dispensing, free parking, a state-of-the-art medical campus, and continued surgery at Kaleida hospitals. With the transition from Gates, the program looks forward to a continued relationship with Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo,” Dr. Wheeler said.

Patients of the combined organization will also enjoy access to urgent orthopaedic care through Excelsior Express, housed on the Excelsior Medical Campus in Amherst, available from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Saturday.  Care at Excelsior Express is covered by all three major health insurers in Western New York (Independent Health, BlueCross BlueShield and Univera).

Officials from both organizations said other benefits resulting from the consolidation include:

  • The opportunity to combine the academic model at The Hand and Shoulder Center of Western New York with the private practice model at Excelsior, which ultimately benefits patients while broadening the educational experience of the fellows and residents;
  • Greater business stability resulting in continued growth and the potential expansion and further development of the Excelsior Medical Campus in Amherst;
  • The ability to continue providing excellent patient care and serve the region’s orthopaedic medical needs in the ever-changing and increasingly challenging healthcare marketplace;
  • Expanded use of electronic medical records (EMRs) already in place at both organizations to accelerate the adoption and use of state-of-the-art health information technology to support physicians in caring for their patients as outlined in the Healthcare Reform Act;
  • Further investment in clinical research and adherence to evidence-based medicine.
