George's Has Good Food, Great Memories

I grew up only a couple miles away from George’s Hot Dog Stand and have fond memories of the place from my childhood.  Even though I haven’t been back in a while, I am well aware of their menu and how diehard their fans are.  I know many people who look forward to the first day they open their doors for the season.  Since I’ve moved into the city, our dining in the Southtowns in general has dropped off and I’ve been wondering when I’d get another chance to go back to George’s.

Last night Alli and I had to make a trip to OP and decided to stop by for a quick dinner.  Even at 6:30pm on a random Wednesday night there was a line well out of the door.  Almost every picnic table was taken and their expanded parking lot was also near capacity.  For those who aren’t familiar, you enter the restaurant and place your order and then slowly slide down the counter where you are handed your drinks and finally your food.  It can look somewhat intimidating to a new customer but the process is remarkably streamlined and it’s entertaining for the kids to watch order slips be thrown down the zipline.

A friend of mine had just visited George’s and I asked her for any new menu recommendations, while I didn’t try the sweet potato fries she suggested, I ended up getting a good sample of their standard menu.  I ordered their Big George ($4), a quarter pound burger on a Costanzo roll and topped with lettuce, tomato and mayo.  This isn’t the kind of place where they ask you how you want the burger cooked, it’s a frozen prepackaged beef pattie but that’s OK.  The roll is a little big for my taste but it’s a nice grilled burger that is served within seconds of being taken off the grill.
