Congressman Applauds End to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell but Cites WNY Bullying Incident As Reminder that “Our Work Is Not Done”

Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) spoke on the Floor of the House of Representatives in support of the continued fight against discrimination in America.  In his remarks, the Congressman celebrated the end of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but cited the recent tragic incident in which a teen from the Western New York community took his own life as a result of bullying as further evidence that more must be done.

Below is the text of Congressman Higgins remarks:

Mr. Speaker,

I am proud to come before this body today to celebrate the end of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Red Jacket Awards at the Historical Society Honor Letro, Walsh

The Board of Managers of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society is pleased to announce that they have selected Cindy Abbott Letro, and John N. Walsh as recipients of its annual Red Jacket Award. The board will present the awards at a dinner and ceremony at the Historical Society’s museum on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m.

The Red Jacket Award is given annually in recognition of quiet, continued, unbroken devotion to civic progress. Created 54 years ago, in 1957, by the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, the award is based upon a medal presented in 1792 by President George Washington to the renowned Seneca orator and leader Red Jacket.

Photos from the Quaker Arts Festival

In spite of yesterday's Bills' game, there was still a great turnout at the 50th annual Quaker Arts Festival in Orchard Park.

Sponsored by the Orchard Park Jaycees, this event showcases the work of hundreds of artists and craftsmen from all over Western New York, as well as some from out of the area.

I took the liberty -- with permission from the exhibitors, of course -- of taking some photos of the artistic treasures on display yesterday. As you might have guessed from the above photo, I will start by showing you some of what the "Lucky Bamboo" tent had to offer.

Mills, Collins Pardon Shirley the Pig at the Erie County Fair

Erie County Legislator John J. Mills and Erie County Executive Chris Collins changed the fortunes of one lucky pig this past weekend, saving her from the dinner table and giving her a second chance at life.

Responding to a request from a local teenager and 4-H participant, Mills and Collins pardoned Shirley the pig at the Erie County Fair on Sunday, August 14, 2011. Rachael Smith, who raised the 265-pound pig from birth, recently wrote to Legislator Mills hoping he would consider buying Shirley at the 4-H Youth Market Auction at the Erie County Fair.  Legislator Mills liked the idea and contacted County Executive Chris Collins, who was also enthusiastic about the opportunity.
